ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Multicentre Echo Teaching Series (METS) is a national educational initiative dedicated to advancing perioperative echocardiography through collaborative, case-based learning.
Bringing together cardiac anesthesiologists, echocardiographers, intensivists, cardiologists, fellows, residents, and allied healthcare professionals from across Canada, METS creates a forum for sharing expertise, discussing challenging clinical cases, and fostering meaningful academic collaboration.
Live monthly rounds
Expert faculty from coast to coast present real-world cases in contemporary perioperative echocardiography, structural heart interventions, hemodynamic assessment, and complex decision-making.
By connecting clinicians across institutions and provinces, METS is building a vibrant national perioperative echocardiography community committed to excellence in education, innovation, and patient care.

Session Objectives
1. Critically appraise cases in which TEE was used to refine diagnosis, detect new pathology, adjust surgical plan and assess surgical results.
2. Apply the recommendations of the ASE Guidelines to real cases.
3. Interpret TEE findings in the context of surgical literature and best practices.
Faculty Bio
Dr. Fabio de Vasconcelos Papa is a staff anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Papa graduated from the University of São Paulo, where he also finished his anesthesia residency. He completed his clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Papa is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).

PROGRAM DIRECTORS
Dr. Kendra Derry
St. Michael’s Hospital · University of Toronto
Dr. Kendra Derry is an attending cardiac anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto. She serves as an interventional echocardiographer within the Structural Heart Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, with a clinical focus on advanced imaging for complex cardiac interventions. She also currently serves as the Acting Director of Perioperative Echocardiography. In addition, she is the Founder and Director of the Toronto Interventional Echo Summit.
Dr. Derry completed her cardiac anesthesiology fellowship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and holds certification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography. She further advanced her expertise through an Advanced Interventional Imaging Fellowship at Harvard University in Boston, Massachuset
Dr. Ricardo Tachibana
London Health Sciences Centre - Western University
Dr. Ricardo Tachibana completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of São Paulo before pursuing a fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesia at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. Following his fellowship training, he joined the Department of Anesthesiology at London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario, where he practices as a cardiac anesthesiologist.
At London Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Tachibana is actively involved in the education of fellows, residents, and medical students, with a particular focus on perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and cardiac anesthesia. His clinical and academic interests include perioperative echocardiography, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and coagulation management.
Dr. Laurence Sharifi
Toronto General Hospital - University of Toronto
Laurence Sharifi is a cardiac staff anesthesiologist and intensivist at Toronto General Hospital, Canada. His areas of interest include cardiovascular critical care and medical education.
Dr. Raffael Zamper
London Health Sciences Center - Western University
Raffael Zamper, MD, PhD, FASE, is a cardiac anesthesiologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine at Western University, London, Ontario, Canada. He serves as Director of the Cardiac Anesthesia Program, where his clinical and academic work focuses on perioperative echocardiography, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac anesthesia, liver transplantation, and medical education.
His research interests include perioperative echocardiography and coagulation, hemodynamic monitoring, and competency-based medical education. Dr. Zamper is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, has developed several international educational initiatives in perioperative echocardiography, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He also serves on national and international scientific committees and is committed to advancing collaborative research and education in cardiovascular anesthesiology.
Dr. Fabio Papa

Dr. Fabio de Vasconcelos Papa is a staff anesthesiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto and acts as Cardiovascular Fellowship Director.
Dr. Papa graduated from the University of São Paulo, where he also completed his anesthesia residency. He completed his clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Papa is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE).
